About The Role:
Reporting to the President and Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Operations is the executive owner of guest and member experience at all current and future Sweat and Tonic locations. Direct reports include a dedicated Studio Manager at each location responsible for overseeing Front-of-House and Back-of-House teams, a dedicated F&B Manager responsible for the F&B operations and teams at each location and a Commissary Manager responsible for an off-site commissary kitchen, laundry and procurement hub in the east end of Toronto. The Director of Operations is responsible for the guest journey including all digital POS and the entire in-person experience with the exception of group fitness instruction.
The Director of Operations holds executive responsibility for guest and member experience in-person and online, guest experience strategy, enterprise efficiency through labour and supplies expense management at each location, F&B strategy and income statement and key brand KPIs including online reviews and NPS. The Director of Operations is responsible for key aspects of team member experience including company-wide onboarding/offboarding processes, the executive management of S&T Academy learning management system and team member benefits. Team engagement is measured through an annual ENPS.
The Director of Operations sits on the Senior Leadership team where key stakeholders include the Director of Fitness, the counterpart to the Director of Operations in delivering a world class group fitness experience. Other SLT members include a Director of Construction who oversees the Facilities team, a Director of Tonic Spa who is the executive lead Tonic Spa Wellness and Recovery hub, and a Director of Finance who leads the finance team in financial reporting and compliance.
The Director of Operations will work Monday - Friday, on-site, understanding that the business operates 7 days a week opening as early as 6am and closing as late at 10:30pm. As such, the DOO will be required to work outside of their regular work week and at unconventional times and is expected to manage their time accordingly.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Strategy & Budgeting
Development and execution of strategic business plans aligned with enterprise strategic priorities.
Position the business for scale, ensuring increased efficiency as the company grows.
Develop and manage annual budgets for all operational departments. Report monthly, quarterly and annually versus plan.
Analyze and optimize income statements related to F&B and merchandise sales, driving profitability through pricing and expense management.
Identify and implement new revenue-generating opportunities and cost-saving initiatives.
Operations Oversight
Oversee studio-level operations through direct reports, including Studio Managers and F&B Managers, ensuring consistent execution of high standards across all locations.
Establish and enforce operational procedures and quality standards for both Front-of-House and Back-of-House departments.
Monitor studio performance through KPIs and operational audits, proactively addressing performance gaps or inefficiencies.
Lead expansion-related operations planning for new location launches or upgrades.
Customer & Brand Experience
Own the in-studio and digital experience for guests and members including all digital POS, email, phone and web chat experience.
Position the brand for scale, owning a library of world class SOPs and their delivery.
Maintain ultimate responsibility for ensuring the guest experience across all locations reflects the Sweat and Tonic mission.
Evaluate and implement new systems, tools, or technologies to enhance the customer journey and operational efficiency.
Marketing and Events:
Work cross-functionally with the marketing and events teams to deploy resources to role out activations.
Ensure accuracy on all digital POS.
Ensure brand-aligned messaging and FAQs for seasonal and ongoing promotions.
Food & Beverage
Lead the strategic vision, planning, and execution of Tonic Bar concepts across locations.
Maintain oversight of all F&B financial performance metrics, including revenue, COGS, labor, and waste.
Develop supplier relationships to ensure product quality and profitability.
Work with F&B Managers to execute service standards, inventory systems and ensure F&B operations meet brand, health, safety, and service standards.
Work with Commissary Manager on menu development, logistics,schedules and cost management.
Retail Merchandising
Execute the company’s merchandise strategy, including product curation, pricing, visual merchandising, and sales optimization.
Facilities
Work with Facilities Manager to maintain facilities at a world-class standard with minimal downtime on revenue generating equipment.
Leadership & Team Development
Executive lead for S&T Academy, learning management system.
Build and inspire a culture of high performance with accountability, growth, and collaboration.
Build high-performing operations and F&B leadership teams.
Oversee recruitment, training, and performance management of direct reports and contribute to leadership pipeline development.
Champion cross-location consistency while supporting localized execution where appropriate.
Communication & Collaboration
Serve as a senior liaison between the COO and studio-level operations, ensuring the strategic direction is communicated and implemented effectively.
Collaborate with leaders in Events, Marketing and Finance to align on and meet shared goals and initiatives.
Ensure timely and effective communication of policies, process changes, and company-wide updates to relevant teams.
About You:
Fitness and wellness is a priority.
5+ years managing a P&L of $10 million or more in annual revenue.
5+ years with direct or indirect reporting responsibilities for 30 or more team members.
Strong financial acumen.
Skills in data analysis and microsoft excel.
Experience and comfort with a wide range of operational software.
Strong attention to detail for formatting.
You thrive in the absence of a rigid schedule in a rapidly changing environment.
You work well in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
You possess excellent critical thinking and analytical skills.
You take a hands-on, team-first approach to leadership.
A degree in business management or similar discipline is an asset.
Prior experience in a high-volume fitness environment is an asset.
Prior experience in a high-volume F&B environment is an asset.
Compensation and Benefits:
Base salary $105 - $135k per annum dependant on experience
Enrollment in annual management bonus plan targetted at 15%
